Question Why do puffers puff?

Other than being scared or to protect themselves from predators, why do puffers puff? Several mornings in a row now he puffs early in the morning. He has no predators in our tank

I have read that it's quite common for them to do it in captivity for no apparent reason.

I was told when they sleep they puff up
to ward of any unexpected predators
if your seeing this in the am he may still be sleeping
