Do puffers sleep?
I have a Figure 8 puffer that has been doing well. A couple times now in the morning I have found him curled up and appeared to be stuck in a cave or against some other decoration in his tank, but when I moved the thing, he darted off. Is he just sleeping? He seems to be eating fine, and his color is normal, just worried.

My little GSP does the same thing. I'll look in the tank late at night and he will be at the bottom doing nothing, then when I come to the tank he moves around all excited. I have read somewhere that the puffers do sleep but i'm not 100% on that. Anyone know?

Trust me, they definitely sleep. Sometimes I forget that they are sleeping, and I walk in the room and turn on my lamp and it scares em and they swim into things. But with a real faint light, you'll see that they will just sit there motionless...just sleeping. My amazons lay on the bottom under plants and my dwarfs lay in the plants...almost like little owls, haha.

Makes me feel a little better, thanks for the reply. He sometimes sits on top of the submersible heater, like a little perch for him. The tail curl i just found odd, but then my moms dwarf puffer seems to curl its tail up sometimes too. The first time it happened I thought he was dead for sure, but thing are going well with him. Started a drip of salt water to acclimate him to brackish water, the LFS had the puffers in fresh water. Hope this one lives a long healthy life. I love puffers and have owned many, just seems I can't get one to last more than a year.

That's what I thought. Mine will lay in a corner with his taill curled to the side sometimes too. It definitely scared me at first (and still does sometimes) but I guess that's just his way of sleeping.

Haha yeah, mine always did that too. It's pretty much the cutest thing in the world.

I love this. Mine curls his tail around him and attaches himself to the suction of the filter. I was sure he was dead the first time.

Haha, my GSP does this too, he'll swim into a little conch shell in his tank, curl his tail around, and just lay there. I was sure he was dead the first time I saw this, but when I moved his jar of shrimp that sits next to the tank, he woke up and started spazzing around the tank the way he does when he wants to be fed.
