Subject: Larry LaPrise dead at 93
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.
Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

The continuing saga of life with Scooter:
Absolutely zero, nadda, zilch trouble with this little guy. I did crank the flow down just a smidge because I am a worried mom, but the water still moves at a pretty good clip and Scooter is OK with it. Every once in a while I turn all pumps on full bore to blow detritus into the overflow. While not exactly pleased with the situation, Scooter handled it well. He would swim into the pump wake and get shot across the aquarium, only to swim into another wake. There is a lot of larger caves in the live rock, where the other fish go during blow outs, but Scooter seems to refuse....
There has been zero problems with other fish preventing Scooter from getting enough food. Sometimes he takes food right out of the PP Puffer's mouth, and, still, there is no objection from the puffer. Scooter zips around and gets his fill.
I was late feeding one nite last week and, after sitting on the couch and getting squirted with water, i immediately blamed my husband. Turned out it was Scooter spitting at me telling me to get the heck up and get his dinner! The interesting thing is, my husband had been on the couch for a while before I got home, and Scooter didn't spit on him. My husband doesn't feed - I do, and apparently Scooter knows the difference between us and the importance of that difference. Even the PP Puffer begs food from my husband. Not Scooter, he waits and demands food from his slave.
So far, and this is early into our relationship, there has been no fire and brimstone involved with keeping a THORNBACK cowfish.
I am very suprised that there are not any other Thornback keepers out there chiming in....

I'm loving this story of Scooter the "wonderfish" He's so cool looking and obviously too smart for the room.
Squirting at you to get your attention?? That's just crazy. I love it.

Scooter, the saga continues....
Ok, so I am but a stupid human. All the boards and all the reputable LFS say NEVER and I mean NEVER attempt a cowfish if you want your other fish to survive. They are nothing but skittish, toxic time bombs. Initially, the longhorn caught my fancy, but again, TIME BOMB, as well as a huge size issue, if they haven't killed all as well as themselves in the tank gave me pause. Research indicated the thornback as a 'less' toxic and smaller version. Still, bringing Scooter into the fold was taking a chance with my other kids....
The disclaimer here is that Scooter is in a 110, so I can't swear one way or another if a smaller tank would make a difference, but still, why all the hype? Scooter not only holds his own with the other kids (another disclaimer: I rehomed the clowns and the chromis. The yellow tailed damsels were moved to the [gasp!] mantis tank, where, eerily and crazily not only are they still alive, but sleep in Steve's (the mantis) cave every nite. These 3 species being the more nasty critters in my tank. (The damsels presented to Steve because they were demonic little creatures that I couldn't give away.) But I digress....
Scooter cohabitates with 2 puffers, a toby, 2 flame hawkfish, 2 green file fish (welcome Frank N. Stien, who came to us a couple days ago since Igore went on strike in controlling the aiptasia), a flame angel, and a few other smaller or ground dwelling fish. Scooter still pulls food from Luigi the PP puffer's mouth, and since Brian, the dogface has finally ventured out of the live rock, Scooter also attempted the same stelth feeding technique on him. While all literature says Brian should scare the bejeevers out of Scooter, it is in fact Brian who heads for the hills when Scooter comes around - Scooter being only half the size of Brian.
I did another simulated storm tonite, turning all pumps on full bore. The little fella still does a vertical rise in front of the pumps, but slightly up, just to catch a wave and be shot across the tank. I now have a second oppinion that it is not me reading too much into his actions, he is indeed doing this deliberately.

Continued... I got locked out of the previous post before it was done. Sorry!

I wish I had a camcorder!
I LOVE this little guy! Granted, it hasn't been very long that he has been one of us, but I would have thunk that if he was going to nuke the tank, he would have done it by now. At this time, I would tell people not to fear these little hovercraft - embrace them! I am as I type this, eyeing up the 29g as a potential home for a second one. It would be nifty to crack the code and be able to captive breed. All I need is someone who can tell me how to tell gender!

This is a great thread. Please keep it coming. We need more documentation like this to really advance the hobby and care of special species. First hand accounts are extremely valuable. In fact, after you have this little guy for a few months, I would suggest that you post an article on their care.
