Puffer has not Eaten for a Week!

It's been 7 days since he ate, 2 days ago we got the Nitrate down to 20, all other water chemical/temp (even 78) issues are not a concern (verified by multiple sources).

GSP is 4 yrs old, about 5 inches long and has always been a good eater. No sign of exterior parasites. Simply refuses all offers of food, even when held and placed in his mouth.

His teeth are healthy and his color stays between dark and somewhat lighter. Swims back and forth on bottom back side of 40 gal tank. Water is brackish at 1.015. No changes to tank for many months (other than maintenance), no new plants or objects added.

Only feed him clams, blood worms and sometimes squid.

What other reasons would he continue to NOT EAT?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear and I have no personal experience with them but since his teeth are in good shape I can assume that they don't need to be trimmed or filed down?

Have you tried soaking the food in garlic juice? That seems to be a natural appetite stimulant. Crush a clove of garlic in a small amount of water and let the food soak in it for a bit before feeding.

Hopefully someone with puffers will be along to help. Good luck.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Thanks for the suggestion, yes we have tried the garlic, etc to spark the appetite, still not interested in eating. His teeth are proper in size.

Although I haven't run into this with any of my puffers, I have had a hystrix stingray that I had for a LONG while do the same thing with no signs/symptoms other than he just didn't wanna eat.

With it being a GSP, I can offer u 2 food items that my puffers go crazy for which u may not have tried. First, shell on shrimp from the grocery store. U can buy them as a frozen bag out of the freezer, they are clean and will not harm your fish. Second, good old fashioned night crawlers. I get them from Walmart (bait stores will also have them) and I buy the 18 Canadian Night Crawlers in the little fridge in the sporting section where all the fishing poles are. They are also clean and will not harm your fish.

11 tanks @ 660 gallons currently active... From river monsters to rasboras. Check out my YouTube and subscribe!
